Another user proposed a layout change that already makes things more compact and it's easier to navigate.

Material editor
Although I really love Octane, the material editor is little difficult to use.
There are too many sliders to control, they all look the same, and the titles are not too obvious.
A very good example of material editor is the one that fry has.

1. Click the camera icon in the node inspector and look for the words "pos" and "target".
2. You need to change the material to "specular" and play with the settings.
