Ship Animation by FrostFX
Hi, we did this particular animation a while back.
Render times between 5-30min per frame on 3-5 980Ti's. Ocean shots rendered in Houdini Octane (2.2) and other 3dsMax Octane (3.0). Waves are made with Houdini Ocean Toolkit and particles are custom setup.

Re: 2 x TitanX
2xTitan X (2x3072 cores) is actually more than 2x times faster than single Titan (2688 cores).

Re: how to render image out with less than 10 colors
Not sure if this is even possible with octane. I would use some posterize filter in photoshop or other compositing software.

Re: Scene fails to render but is below memory usage?
This might be the case, i remember we had same problem. This limitation is removed in OC3.

Re: Scene fails to render but is below memory usage?
How many polygons you have in the scene? In current Octane version theres is limit how many polygons you can use (has to fit into 2gb i think).

Re: unable to get rid of flicker and noise
I would at least give octane a chance before jumping to vray. Try to avoid very reflective surfaces, too many lights , optimize your settings and you will get reasonable render time.
Here you can see similar lighting scenario we rendered with octane https://vimeo.com/112264174
