Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you're not using any SubSurface Scattering(SSS). Give it a try, that should already add a lot more realism.

Simple it comes down to three options:
Option 1: You pay for the software, the full price as there are no discounts for students. And the upgrading discount from 1.x does not count for student licences. So you would pay $450 (standalone + plugin).
