With haïr and fur, convert to géomètry to render.
Daylight system Is under octane section in control panel, create, lights
For instances, right clic on object, octane proporties and check radio button.

Faster results at the left, slower at right

UPDATE:
I've added 2.59 and 3.03
2.59 is the faster except for screws. In 3.XX series 3.02X1 is the faster version.

Very good update!
Very usefull features for a "b" version ;)
Just, Icons and text in preview window blink all the time; difficult to click on... :|

I work with a GTX460 and I have the same problem.
Sometimes I fix the issue by reopen Mat Editor and sometimes I have to relaunch Max.
Not very stable ATM...

The portals should only speed up the rendering times (in best case). The difference in look is very subtle.
Search for the Portal tutorial form Radiance.
Alpha Shadows in DL cast alpha shadows. Additionally transparent material let light through what is very handy.

You can't apply materials in Max but you can prepare them.
You have equivalence btwn Max mat and Octane Mat.
Max shader with specular level = 0 is a Octane diffuse material
Max shader with specular level > 0 and IOR =1.0 is an Octane glossy material.
Max shader with specular level > 0 and IOR =1.5 ...
