Hello,
im am looking for a "sparkling" snow shader or some help to build one.
The snowshader should "sparkle" like snow if light falls on it from different angles.
I dont have any idea on how to realize it with octane/ c4d. For AR3 i have some nice snowshaders... but it has to work in octane.
Thx for any help,
djart
Sparkling Snow Shader... how to make it?

Already found a solution by using a normal map.
I attached the file for tesing purpose only, cause the metallic texture is found on the internet somewhere.
It was taken from some whitepaperstuff, but cant remember the source anymore. If someone knows it, please drop a note.

So I thought i'd try to take a stab at this.
No bitmap textures. All noise and displacement from C4D/Octane. Its unfortunately very slow to render (this frame was about 4min.), but I think its fairly close to actual snow. I've included my project file for others to mess with. If you get a better result in a faster render time, please post it for us to see!
I have a mix material with a base snow texture made up from a specular material with absorbtion medium, transmission, and a very high roughness, and a specular material for the snow's spec with a voronoi noise in the specular channel. The mix material has a noise displacement.
Here's my result:

I came across this post recently while searching for ideas for a snow shader:
http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic. ... hilit=Snow
The result is incredible, but unfortunately it seems the person who made it has fallen off the face of the earth.
Site is suspended, and no contact info. Damn shame, that snow (and lava on the next page) are incredible.

He's still around as Cleanerxx says, they handled the transition to masteringcgi.com.au very badly, so there are no redirects in place (super simple to setup too...)dotcommer wrote:unfortunately it seems the person who made it has fallen off the face of the earth.Site is suspended, and no contact info. He actually made the snow shader in Octane whilst researching how to do it in Vray, results are fantastic as usual.
cheers
