Multiple video card setups -- OPTIONs?

I have room for another gtx580 card in my case -- but I was wondering if its possible to have a second system with 2 cards, and run some kind of adapter which allows them to plug into the PCI port of the main system. Kind of like my own Cubix Xpander.
