Addon vs Custom build render speed

Hi there!
I am still using the old custom build but like to dip my toe into the addon version every now and then to see how it is coming along. So today downloaded the latest stable version (31.10).
And I can't help but notice the difference in render speeds is still pretty large:
In the few different test renders I did across a few old projects of varying size and complexity, I was getting render times that 30-50% slower in the addon version. In the custom build I can get 24fps viewport playback on a simple scene, in the addon version (with the exact same file) it is hovering around 7 fps.
Has anyone else noticed the same?
Team Octane - Is this a known thing or am I an outlier here? Is there a plan to match addon performance to custom build? Or is the addon version inherently just going to be slower due to the new software architecture?
There are so many great features in the newer versions I would love to use - but as I do a lot of animation work, 30-50% longer render times is sadly not something I can build into my timelines.
I really appreciate all the amazing work of the developers and whole Octane team in bringing us Octane Blender, which has been a massive game changer for me and I'm sure many others - but I guess I am just really curious to know if the addon version with all the tasty new features will be usable for people like me, or if I will be stuck forevermore on the (perfectly working and solid) final custom build?
Apologies if I'm bringing up something that has been discussed plenty before at some point, but I couldn't see another topic that seemed to address it!
Cheers,
Adam.
