Hair Test Grid showing

I am playing with the hair render right now and there is a strange grid showing under the monkey.
Is this a bug ? Any help and comments appreciated.

It works fine here in both 30.7 and 30.8 in Blender 4.5.3 (addon version).
It also works fine in the custom version:
