Material overwrite

Hi,
As now we have a material switcher could we have a better material overwrite ala Vray where we can choose at last something else then white ?
I do this but it is good for scene with few materials...
And switch materials with : for a in sceneMaterials do a.index=2
It would be nice to use this powerfull tool !
