"Save object as" breaking materials

My object has a mix material and if I try to export out my object as a .C4D file (file>save object as), the material completely breaks. It'll just have the end mix material but nothing down the graph. same thing happens if I try save a xRef. Is there a different way to make this work?

Mix material connections are not supported by C4D. It's done for different operation by me via hacked ways. Use copy/paste to new scene and save it

Hi,
Please avoid to use the Mix Material, and prefer to use the Composite Material instead.
https://docs.otoy.com/cinema4d/CompositeMaterial.html
Mix Material has several limitations in C4D, works only with 2x materials, it needs to work in conjunction with 2x other node materials so it is difficult to move it in another scene, it doesn't work in C4D Content Browser, and doesn't work correctly with Solo mode.
Composite Material solves all there limits, and it also works correctly with Solo mode.
If you select a Mix Material in Material Manager, then go to Live View menu Materials/Convert Material, it will be automatically converted into a Composite material
Mix Material is obsolete and available only for retro compatibility.
ciao,
Beppe

Thanks for answers, I'll start using composite materials.

So, tried doing this and it most definitely broke the material (not exactly sure what it did--i'll have to look the no graph more closely). are there any caveats/tips when converting? or is it something that will sometimes work but sometimes not, depending on the complexity of the mix material?

Hi,
I don't remember of any particular conversion issue
Can you share an example Mix material with assets, that gives a broken conversion into Composite?
