hi - I am totally new to aces - watching videos for cd4 to figure out how to set it up, and I am wondering if I am doing this correctly? in the camera settings I just checked the aces tonemapping, then only later did I download the ocio config - when OCIO view is set to ACES:sRGB , the ACES Tone Mapping check box doesn't do anything, and I am not sure its supposed to? I just want to make sure I am setting this up correctly.
thank you

Hi, I will stop you right here. Some related forum threads:

And I can't
stress enough on insisting to share that ACES is
dispensable and literally unnecessary for the vast majority cases.

This page and
this one will help. In spite of showing Octane Standalone GUI, it applies to plugins as well, universally.

The links above should clarify all of this, although ACES will likely not be used at all.
Do not hesitate if you have any question.

thank you very much for all the information - I am reading through it, trying to understand it all, but to cut to the chase, what is the better alternative? the link you provided -
https://www.elsksa.me/scientia/cgi-offl ... ender-aces mentions one but gives me a 404 error.
thank you!

Just use 1 or the other, not both at once (eg. use the ACES tone mapping checkbox without the OCIO config)
The tone mapping checkbox will actually be more accurate than using the OCIO config (although probably not noticeable).
You'll only need the OCIO config if you have input textures in a different color space that need to be transformed by image texture nodes.

ok got it - does this mean the C4D tutorials - which all seem to show changing the OCIO config and a few other things, is not necessary in the Modo plugin?

The ACES tone mapping checkbox was only recently added to Octane 2022.1 XB1 (still experimental builds), so the tutorials you see online are most likely for earlier release builds (2021.1.x or earlier)

This ^
...which is mentioned on the link I provided, in bold, under the section
"Native “ACES look” (RRT+ sRGB ODT) | v2022.1 XB1"
There is a section about this feature on the aforementioned link (ACES in Octane, same section as previously mentioned).
