Toon Shader Inverted Hull technique from Blender in C4D?

in the video Lino Grandi posted about using the toon shader, he uses a technique involving the Blender Solidify modifier and using the Side texture -> Opacity to create outlines around objects:

is there a way to do this in C4D? I've tried experimenting with the Cloth Surface but it doesn't work the same way.

Are the edges/outlines supposedly what the Anime kernel will fix? It seems extremely tedious/resource heavy to need to duplicate every object in every scene and add a modifier that only works in one program (and then export/re-import everything to use it in C4D) to be able to have basic outlines
