Is there a limit to number of shared materials?

I have a simple scene with 32 objects that I linked materials with. The material only appeared on a limited number. It was listed in prop. editor as having the material, but wouldn't show in IPR unless I made it single user copy. Not a big deal with only 32 objects, but I'd like to be prepared for larger scene.
