Still image compositing workflow, help !

Hi!
as the title suggests I have a commercial project that requires me to composite some renders from C4D / Octane into some photographs,
I really only need very limited control in Photoshop, just a Shadow pass (with no beauty) and a beauty pass (with no shadow),
so far all of my passes come out with information I don't need, such as shadow pass giving white mattes for geometry etc. you can see here - https://ibb.co/zsH7qHv
also bizarrely some 'correct' shadow passes have come through with too little information to allow me to adjust their levels in PS?
basically its got pretty confusing, I had an okay understanding before the new AOV overhaul and now I'm completely lost, also I'm finding that the manuals available aren't fully up to date and there aren't many up to date tutorials.
I was wondering if theres any good tutorials that show the correct workflow, also how to properly stack and blend shadow passes in PS,
any tips greatly appreciated!
