Dear Octane community,

OTOY® is proud to announce the availability of the new DCC plugin OctaneRender for Solaris V2021.1.1 - for Houdini 19.0.455.

The world's fastest unbiased GPU rendering engine on CUDA and Metal now integrate completely with Houdini 18.5 Solaris.

What is OctaneRender for Solaris?
The OctaneRender for Solaris plugin is based on Pixar’s USD (Universal Scene Description) and Pixar’s Hydra API to empower artist workflows across look development, scene layout, lighting, and final rendering.

-Installation steps-

Insert the OctaneRender® plugin folder path to the houdini.env file. Houdini®creates this file after launching it for the first time.
On Linux and macOS® systems, append a single line to enable OctaneRender®:

HOUDINI_PATH = "/path/to/octane;&"

On Windows® systems, you need to set the PATH to point to the plugin bin folder as well:

PATH = "C:/path/to/octane/bin;$PATH"

Setting this environment variable outputs any error related to loading the OctaneRender® plugin on the command line for diagnosing installation problems:
HOUDINI_DSO_ERROR = 2

New features
To learn more about the new features and improvements of OctaneRender 2021.1.1, please check out the 2021.1.1 release post

- Changes since 2021.1.1 - 01 07 22 [Test]-
  • Fixed seeing first rendered frame updates
  • Updated default settings for RenderSettings node (Max Samples, Subsampling
  • Disabled Solaris unused Z-buffer
  • Fixed Denoiser pass when using Octane AOV HDA node
  • Performance improvement when render from camera view

-Known Issues-
- Global texture AOV is in WIP
- Octane Color response is disabled because Hydra buffer expects linear output
- Light Linker is yet to be supported as we are investigating if we could assign the Octane light IDs internally.
However, the usual Octane light linking works as expected.

I've installed the Solaris plugin under a new folder in the following path; C:\Program Files\Side Effects Software\Houdini 19.0.455\bin\usd_plugins. Although when starting Houdini, Octane shows up in the list of render engines; but immediately thereafter is removed from the render engines list in LOPs, as well does not switch the Octane delegate ?

Hi, I had the same issue. Turned out that it was related to the version of Houdini I was using. With Houdini 19.0.455 and the following variables in the .env file, I managed to get Octane to work inside Solaris:

Code: Select all

HOUDINI_PATH = "C:/Program Files/OTOY/OctaneSolarisEnterprise_2021.1.1.0_Houdini_19.0.455_Win64;&"
PATH = "C:/Program Files/OTOY/OctaneSolarisEnterprise_2021.1.1.0_Houdini_19.0.455_Win64/bin;$PATH"
Hope this helps.

Houdini crashes when starting Solaris ?

Although the paths are correct, as the compressed file for Solaris contains the same folders as the Octane compressed files; with the exception of the additional Solaris files.

Any update for the 531 version? :D

Also, I just realized this was a thing. Does it work alongside the regular Houdini Octane plugin?

Hi Sportler,

Thank you for the follow-up!
Unfortunately, we found Octane freeze bug when trying to stop and restart and prevent the app from quitting.
Our core team is helping to debug! Hope we could fix this asap!
