composite material masking

I am texturing a label with different inks. It has a base printed white on a clear label, then other inks on top.

I'm trying to use a composite material, with material masks for the different inks. I want use the material1 mask slot to restrict where the printed white goes. Putting a black and white image in this slot has no effect. The material mask slots work on the other inks, but not on material1.

Can I get this working? If not, what is the purpose of the Material1 Mask slot?

I don't know what mask is doing. Ask to core devs. But mask2, mask3, etc... are working. And don't you use these and trying to use that something is not obviously working? It's my curiosity...

So how do I make a label with multiple inks and also be able to define transparent areas using a mask?

I'm now using my base material in Material2 slot with a mask in Material2 mask slot and it still doesn't work

Got it working by using the base material mask in Material 1's opacity slot, then the other materials use masks in the material mask slots of the composite material.

why don't you use mat1 for your base and others for labels? It's the standard way
