Can you confirm my understanding on Linear Workflow?

Hello Otoy,

I have review all the info on Linear workflow but still dont get the results expected.

I highlighted my settings. Everything seems to be as described in numerous tutorials but my LINEAR content from c4d octane renders are still dark when i bring them into After Effects. Can you please take a look at the screen shots and tell me where im messing up?

Thank you!

Would I be able to get some help on this? I would like to send my file to render but need to work this out first.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure if otoy has specific hours they monitor the board but if there are some moderators here, I would really appreciate a reply.

Please upgrade to the latest version of Octane. Many improvements in this area have been made since the version you are using.

For Linear Rendering:

Make sure your camera response curve is Linear. Your first screenshot on the left shows you have it set to sRGB. This will bake in sRGB, losing the linear aspect.

In the Octane Render Passes menu, the results you have on that tab will NOT be saved given the state you have in the second screenshot. To properly save elements from that tab, you need to set the Enable flag. Using the standard Cinema 4D save option will run the file through the Cinema 4D color management pipeline, which is inaccurate.

The PNG file format is really not the best to use. Better to use the EXR(Octane) format for best results.

In the third screenshot, you are again specifying an sRGB work space. While you can have linear sRGB, and that may be what you want, it is a much smaller color space than full ACES 2065-1 or ACEScg, for example. Both of these options are available in Octane for output, as of build 2020.2.1x

I will leave the fourth screenshot for those more skilled in AE than I am...

JayRoth, you mentioned changing the RESPONSE to Linear but didnt mention anything about the GAMMA. Does that mean the GAMMA should stay at 1?

I found this in the octane manual. It says for a linear workflow use a RESPONSE of sRGB and set the GAMMA to 1 (this is equal to a Linear respone). I even remember Oaktar saying to leave this setting as is for the most part. Here is screen shot.

Yes, gamma should stay at 1.0 for a true linear workflow. That said, I tend to fudge the gamma as needed for my stuff.

What about that screen shot i just posted from the manual. It says to use the sRGB in the RESPONSE with a GAMMA of 1. is that correct? I highlighted the verbage for you.

That is correct. You can have a linear sRGB workflow. If it works for you, then that is all that matters. Others will prefer ACES with a wider color space. Depends on the need.

Just to reiterate is this correct? This technically should view correctly in a compositing program?

To my understanding, yes, though, I think I mentioned previously, EXR(Octane) would be the better file format here.
