Render Size Limitation (false out of memory error)

This is popped up periodically in past versions (hard to say when because I'm not always working at this res). I'm working in version 2020.1.5 of standalone and Maya plugin:
In Maya Plugin:
1. Render frame at 8000x8000px and it renders fine
2. Render frame at 8500x8500px and it gives memory error and won't render (not sure the exact
dimension that this error start to show up.)
3. Check GPU-Z for VRAM usage, and it shows I am not out of vram
4. Turn on Out of core to 48gb of ram. Render still fails
In Standalone (2020.1.5):
5. Export scene and render in standalone.
6. Render at 8500px and it renders fine
6. Render at 14,000x14000 and it renders fine
7. Render at 25,000x25000 and it renders fine

Hi itsallgoode9,
thank you for the post!
we are assuming this memory issue is related to Autodesk Maya itself.
Could you please try rendering a simple scene at 8500x8500px (other renderers may be software)?
In our test, Maya crashed instantly with the Memory error.
cheers

good point. I know already that a simple scene with Octane has the same issue (I tried a scene with only a cube and an HDR in it).
My Maya doesn't crash when trying with octane at 8500, it just gives me this error:
// Error: line 0: A low system memory condition has been detected for the renderer. //
// Error: Octane: Error occured in startRender(). //
But I just tried with software render at 8500 and yeah, it crashed immediately too, so it seems like it's a maya issue.

Thank you Itsallgoode9, for double-checking this.

So yeah, we can confirm it's maya issue.
We hope they would fix it in the next update.
Have a great weekend!
Cheers

I might be wrong but the issue is more related to system memory and not the VRAM. I would take a look into RAM and Commit charge just before starting to render. Also crank up virtual memory in window settings and check if that could help.

Oh l! thanks for pointing that out. You’re right, it never specifically said vram i guess—my mind just automatically went there when i saw ram and involved octane.

I tested that this morning, checking all of that, making sure I wasn't over on system memory and VM and everything was well under limits, so I've contacted autodesk to see if they can help. THanks for helping me troubleshoot this.
