Render (from Daz) not showing material colour when attached

Hi all,
Hope someone can help with this....
I'm using Daz Studio. I load a figure and then load some trousers (Glamour Legging). The trousers are base white but if I try to add a colour, it does not render, just stays white.
In the materials window below i can see 'Glamour Legging' but when you click on it to edit, it does not respond and no small yellow dot comes up next to it. Cant do anything with it.
However, if I unattach the trousers from the figure and then add the colour, it works. The entry in the material window shows two 'drop down' portions of hip and leg and i can edit them.
But....as soon as i attach the trousers back to the figure, it turns base white when i render and the entry in the materials window goes back to just showing Glamour Legging and cannot be edited.
Is there an easy answer to this ?
