Octane particles not adhering to emitter variations

I'm working my way through the Octane manual, so sorry if I've missed anything basic.
Haven't found the same problem on YouTube or the forum either.

I've built a simple whirlwind particle scene in C4D, and want to convert it to Octane.
I've applied the Octane ObjectTag to the emitter, dropped the Emitter into Particle Rendering and it renders,
but it seems Octane ignores the variations from the emitter. The materials works, but the geometry remains on the same axis.
I've read up on the "particle rules" in the manual and the Instance Color section, but can't seem to find anything on using effectors/forces on the particles.

It also renders the particles in "groups" like they're placed in the scene, and not just using them as "ammo" for the particle system.
It all works as expected with the C4D render, but I'm obviously doing something wrong.

Thanks!

UPDATE : I found a workaround in this video https://youtu.be/Jj4BY5ztXm8
Feeding the particle emitter into a cloner made it work. I've seen Aoktar talk about using "Show Objects" in the emitter being a poorly optimized way to render
particles in Octane in another thread, but this worked for now at least. Would still love him to chime in on this, I feel it's not necessary to shell out for X-Particles
for tasks like this :D
