Dear Octane community,

OTOY® is proud to announce the availability of new DCC plugin OctaneRender Hydra | Solaris (V2020.1.5 - for Houdini 18.0.566 and Houdini 18.5.351) and Octane X Hydra | Solaris (PR2 for Houdini 18.0.566).

The world's fastest unbiased GPU rendering engine on CUDA and Metal now integrates completely with Houdini 18.0 Solaris.

What is Octane Hydra | Solaris?
The Octane Hydra | Solaris plugin is based on Pixar’s USD (Universal Scene Description) and Pixar’s Hydra API to empower artist workflows across look development, scene layout, lighting, and final rendering.

The Octane X PR2 release can be downloaded via Download page. Find out more about currently supported GPUs Octane X

-Installation steps-

Insert the OctaneRender® plugin folder path to the houdini.env file. Houdini®creates this file after launch it for the first time.
On Linux and macOS® systems, append a single line to enable OctaneRender®:

HOUDINI_PATH = "/path/to/octane;&"

On Windows® systems, you need to set the PATH to point to the plugin bin folder as well:

PATH = "C:/path/to/octane/bin;$PATH"

Setting this environment variable outputs any error related to loading the OctaneRender® plugin on the command line for diagnosing installation problems:
HOUDINI_DSO_ERROR = 2

- Changes since first beta -
  • Integrated the 2020.1.5 engine.
  • Added Octane Kernels support via MaterialLibrary node.
  • OctaneHydraSolaris plugin is now merged with the main OctaneRender for Houdini plugin
  • Fixed dylib crash issue on macOS
  • Fixed Gradient tool bug
  • Stability on Houdini 18.5.351 and performance improvement

-Known Issues-
- Light Linker is yet to be supported as we are investigating if we could assign the Octane light IDs internally.

Could we atleast get this for the latest production build?? it's I know the developemnt of this and the houdini plugin is separate but come on... this is only for a build that has huge issues, which was fixed in the daily builds and now in the latest production build. We finally got an official houdini build for it, but now we can't use both that and this in the same houdini version as either of them breaks... /sigh

the updates are looking really nice though. :)

Hi Aeromys,

Thank you for your feedback.
yes, Octane Denoiser is working however, we are still yet to add the UI for render outputs and for preview.

The workaround to extract the Denoiser pass and other Octane pass is to use Octane UI.
Please create hdOctaneScenes folder to C:\ drive and an empty txt file then name it as hdOctane.txt.

To enable the Denoiser, you will need to create geometry (sphere and set the scale to 0)> MaterialLibray node>
Inside the MaterialLibray node> you can create Octane Render Target> create Kernels, Octane pass node and Imager node to enable the Denoiser.

Hope you will find this useful !!

Cheers :)

Hi davidyannick_1,

Ah not yet as packages, it still needs to assign the path to houdini.env.
we would check if this is doable later when our plugin is a bit Octane feature complete and Stable.

Cheers

Is it possible to get a LINUX build of this? We're rendering an entire TV show with Houdini Octane and this would be really amazing to try out.

Hi Ptunstall,

Thank you for the post.
Sorry, we are currently planning to implement a few more important Octane features perhaps we may consider builds for LINUX platform after that.
Also, as you know already the windows builds are still beta so we do not recommend using it for production.

Anyway really excited to hear about the TV show!! xd
