Octane Displacement and switching Materials

Hi,
I have a problem that I cannot think has no solution. I would like to generate a scene that is basically just a plane with Displacement. I set up a material, put my displacement map in the displacement channel and everything is cool. But then it comes to shading, I would love to try out some material presets but obviously, they don't have any displacement so when applied, I first need to add the displacement over to then just find out that this does not look as I want it.
Trying out a second material needs the same treatment, and so forth. Look Dev is basically impossible.
I was hoping I could just have the displacement in one material and add another material on top of it. But this doesn't work.
I ended up using the displace effector in C4D because this was too tedious. But I cannot believe that there is no easy way to try out different materials when you have displacement...
Is there any better way to do this?
