focus depth animation

hi,
i am still not entirely sure how cinecameraactor and the rendertarget camera setting work together.
i need to animate the focal distance but the manual focus in the cinemacameraactor apparently has no effect.
the setting that does is in the render target focal depth but i dont know how to animate it.
any tips are appreciated,
