Solid Edge to Octane

Hi all, I am looking for any Solid Edge users out there. I am hoping to find an efficient workflow to get files from Solid Edge into Octane. I am currently using: Solid Edge > Simlab Composer (trial license at this stage) imports directly without translation > to Octane ....but it isn't without its problems - crashing or locking up Octane at times. Thanks.

Hi,

Solid Edge is quite rare on these forums, and other than supported OBJ export (or thru plugins or 3rd party applications) there is not much advise I can give you.
There is no OctaneRender export plugin for Solid Edge at this time.

It is possible to export the STL and import that into blender (or another App), and then export that as an OBJ. Might cause some problems though.

I dont think SE has any mesh export options but STL.
Really Simlab Composer seems pretty useful for you - not familiar with it myself - price seems good too.
what about their SE -> OBJ plugin? http://www.simlab-soft.com/3d-plugins/O ... -main.aspx

Perhaps the lock ups and crashes are due to something other than the OBJ - GPU overheating?
What hardware are you using? Octane version?
I would expect that you could not load a file at all if it had basic issues.

To get OBJ out by other means perhaps something like:

SE -> obj translator - http://www.sycode.com/products/obj_export_se/index.htm - but kind of expensive for what it is - free trial period though.

or perhaps go through MOI using IGES, STEP or SAT (I think) for the same money.
http://moi3d.com/index.htm

or through Rhino using same as above - but even more $$. - has trial of 25 free saves
http://www.rhino3d.com/index.htm

free Meshlab might do the translator job of STL -> OBJ
http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/

Dont know how you would get on regarding setting up the materials and UV/textures for these solns though.
Probably you would be better to go through free Blender with STL (or Max or Maya etc if you have access to these.)

Hi guys,

I'm using Solid Edge a lot for precise 3D modeling and design.
I guess it is an open question how the best practice looks like to make the link between a professional 3D CAD software and a render software like Octane.
Last year I stumbled over Moi3D.
It's a small but powerful and cheap (academic licence cost something around 99$) modeling software by some former Rhino3D guys.
Within this software it is possible to turn a step-file to an obj-file and vice versa.
I using this way a lot.

But in the near fuuire it would be nice, if Ocane renderer would be available as a plug-in for Solid Edge and other 3d CAD software. In my opinion, missing professional abilities to render models in particular are a serious in CAD modeling.
