Network render with Cinema 4D and licence

Hi all,

I was wondering. you only need one licence to be able to do network rendering right?

I'm building a second computer and I'm moving my slowest card (a GTX 1070) on it and use it a slave computer for rendering and help with my Live viewer. I only need to install the standalone and the daemon on the slave right? And log onto it with the same credentials as my main computer?

Because when I go into the settings in the liver viewer this is what I got

It says slave is authenticating.

And then, if I press a few buttons on that window, really don't know which, I can get to this

But as soon as I make it "enabled" it goes back to "slave is authenticating"

And on the slave side, I have this:

"Your licence for this product is currently in use"

So I'm not sure, am I missing something there?

I would love to make this work, because I have in total 4 cards with 8 gigs of vram... I have 3 in my main computer (2080, 2060 Super and 1080) and the 1070 on the slave one... I got 580 on the Octanebench with the 3 cards, up from 504 when I had just the 2080, the 1080 and the 1070. I suppose that with the 4 cards together I could get something like 710. I was actually considering maybe moving the 1080 to the slave machine as it's getting crowded in my main computer if the network rendering is not leaking too much of the potential power? That's actually another question: with network rendering would see roughly the same result as what you would get if all the cards where in the same computer?

Don't know if that helps, but I'm using Octane 2020.1 RC3 on both machines (the master machine has both the 2020.1 RC3 and the 2019 1.5 standalone installed, but the C4D plug in is the latest 2020.1 RC3)

from 2019.1, you need to purchase extra Slave nodes, for Net render with commercial or subscription Enterprise licenses, 99€ a year, or pay monthly for 9.99€:

Ah shoot... Sucks. But maybe I'll do it... It's a bit money grabbing isn't it?

Not a money grab, it's a feature that not everyone needs, but that requires significant resources to develop, maintane, and support. Why make everyone pay for it?

I see what you mean, but the same could be said for any function in Octane or any software for that matter. There are always functions you never use but end up having to pay for anyway. I do feel it should be included in the regular subscription

Yes, there are certainly competing pricing philosophies, and each has their merits. In the case of Octane, Otoy seems to want to keep the barrier to entry as low as possible, preferring a larger user base with smaller average profit per user as opposed to a smaller user base with higher profit per user. A way to do that is using tiered pricing based on feature sets. One of the advantages of this is, theoretically, less market volatility and more potential for users to start small and grow into more profitable customers. That's the way it played out at the company where I work; the barrier to entry was low, so I got the go-ahead to get one base Octane license and start exploring. Now, several years later, we have multiple enterprise and slave node licenses.

Humans are fickle creatures, and economic theory is far from a science. At the end of the day, Otoy is a business that needs to make a profit, and they have to make the best choices they can based on imperfect information. Their current pricing structure is relatively new, so depending on how it performs, it may very well change. Ultimately, you vote with your wallet.
