Maya exported material names in Octane and material renaming

Relative newbie here... trying to learn my way around octane from a traditional 3D rendering background.
I assign custom names to materials in Maya before export, but when the single mesh is imported into Octane the outliner only shows the material type names from Maya. Instead of "TestSphere / Backdrop / LightEmitter1 / ect." I see "Lambert2SG1 / Lambert5SG1 / ect." If I try renaming the material node in the node inspector it'll rename the material node under the sub graph node for that material, but not the top level material name above the Sub Graph ? Makles it REALLY painful to locate the desired materials for adjusting unless I'm missing a workflow feature ?
