Upgrading/Subscribing to 2020 whilst keeping Octane 4?

Hi

First off, forgive my confusion.
I have an Octane 4 perpetual licence, which i keep upgraded and I'm super happy with.
I'm a hobbyist, but really like tinkering with this great renderer, but the new additions to the 2020 release are super enticing.

I'm slightly confused at the structure of buying/subscribing the new version.
I wanted to ask, if I decided to subscribe to the new version, does that negate the perpetual Octane 4 licence I have?

Ideally I would like to keep the Octane 4 licence I have, but also have to option to use the latest version on a subscription basis.
Can I have the two versions concurrently?
Worst scenario would be that; by subscribing to the 2020.x version, I would make my Octane 4 obsolete.

Does anyone currently have this same setup to confirm that the two can co-exist?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Hi Mike,

first of all we need to distinguish between Octane licenses, and Octane versions.
Octane v4 licenses offer you to download and run any v4 and below.
Octane v2020 licenses offer you to download and run any v2020 and below.

At the moment, version 2020 is in Alpha stage for Standalone, and alpha plugin versions are going to come shortly.
The current stable version is 2019.1.4.
Please, have alook at the following document about the new features added after v4, in v2018 (v5), and v2019 (v6):
http://www.aoktar.com/octane/WhatsNewin2018120191.html
It is for c4doctane plugin, but gives you an idea on how much work has be done in this months.

Your commercial v4 licenses are perpetual, and will be always yours.
Now you have two possibility, and extra option, to update your licenses to v2020.
  • if you want to upgrade also your v4 perpetual licenses to perpetual v2020, the upgrading path is more expensive, since you need to pair with users that have purchased the annual extension of the past year, = 499€. Next year will be 199€ to upgrade to v2021:
    https://render.otoy.com/shop/upgrade.php?
  • If you want to stay with your v4 perpetual licenses, but also use new versions, you have no more than 2x GPUs and not interested in Net render, you can purchase an annual Studio subscription for less than 180€, or pay monthly 19,99€:
    https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-ren ... ns/#studio
  • If you have more than 2x GPUs, and need Net render, you can purchase an annual Enterprise subscription for 270€, or pay monthly 29,99€:
    https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-ren ... enterprise
  • For Net render with commercial or subscription Enterprise licenses, you can purchase extra Slave nodes annual license for less than 96€, or pay monthly for 9.99€:
    https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-ren ... ons/#slave
Note that all upgrade paths are offering you the possibility to use any kind of Octane DCC plugin are available (including C4D), and there are no more NvLink or RTX restrictions for Studio subscription licenses.

Happy GPU Rendering,
ciao Beppe

I own 4 perpetual v4 licenses.

1 is used with the C4D plugin on my workstation.
3 are used as net render clients with offline USB dongles.

So to keep it that way and use v2019 or v2020 I have to purchase "an annual Enterprise subscription for 270€" and 3 additional "extra Slave nodes annual license for less than 96€"?

This would total to 560.- / year (46.- / month) - Is this correct?

Because this seems to me like a lot of money.

What if i want to upgrade my 2018.x/2019.x license to a 2020.x perpetual one? Is that even a possibility?

On a similar note to lightboy's post are we obliged to subscribe to this new enterprise system, if all we require is V4 licenses?

Is it possible to purchase Octane v4 Licensees anymore?

I use V4 with a perpetual license for standalone and the C4D plugin (no subscription) I am very happy with it at the moment. I would like to purchase another for a second machine however I see that we can no longer do that via the shop.
It seems to me that if the versioning is being split, those of us who are happy with v4 licenses should still have the option to purchase additional licenses as we used to be able to do.
As a consumer I don't like the feeling that I am being forced into purchasing a subscription when previously I had purchased license and would like to continue.
I apologise if I am wrong in my assumption here or that I have missed an important detail and would like to be proved incorrect and better informed. But please understand that change in the model proves to be quite difficult to understand and therefore to justify financially for some users.

Yes - on the shop->buy->maintenance page, there is “update legacy perpetual license” if you have already purchased Octane. Otherwise you need to buy it as a new licence if you are coming from subscription only.

I will write to the support.

Honestly, it's ridiculous how hard it is to buy Octane.

Hi Beppe, also for me is hard to understand the upgrade procedure.

Please help me, our Company have 2 different situation:

1) my position: I've recently (September 9th) buy an OctaneRender® All-Access Pass (1 Year) + End-of-Year Discount for 199€, now I want to know if I could use the new 2020 or not.
In positive case: my subscription plane is valid for one year, after that I should renew for 199 (or the equivalent price next year) in order to have new versions (2021,....)?
If (sadly) not: what is the upgrade that I should buy for obtain 2020?
(just a note: I have paid 691$ for my v3 and 199 for Enterprise version as I said)

2) all my other collegue position: they are on V4 (thay are payed 619$ for standalone+plugin V3), what upgrade they have to do for use the new 2020?

Thanks a lot for your help-

Luca

Hi Luca,
about your position, no problem, your licenses are correctly upgraded to Enterprise Annual extension, so you will have to renew it only in September ‘20.

About your colleagues, they have two options:
  • If they want to use the new versions, they can purchase an annual Enterprise subscription update for 199€, but at the end of the annual maintenance, their licenses will go back to v4:
    https://render.otoy.com/shop/upgrade.ph ... C67-UGAA1Y.
  • if they want to upgrade also their v4 perpetual licenses to perpetual v2020, the upgrading path is more expensive, since they need to pair with users that have purchased the annual extension of the past year, = 499€. Next year will be 199€ to upgrade to v2021:
    https://render.otoy.com/shop/upgrade.php
Note that all upgrade paths are offering you the possibility to use any kind of Octane DCC plugins (including C4D), and also the ORC Octane Render Cloud subscription (render credits need to be purchased separately).
