How do I fix this?

Sun coming through the trees is breaking up the branches. Looks like this in LV as well as EXR export. Thanks for any ideas.

It looks like a clipping/exposure issue when the image is down sampled to 8 bits per channel. You can probably fix it by adjusting your camera exposure, or for more control, render to 32 bits and manually tweak your curves.

Thank you, Frank. It actually was a 32-bit exr, but your suggestion of exposure put me on the path to fixing it.

It is an exposure problem. If I lowered the exposure in camera imager the details returned, not perfect, but good enough. I need to learn how to use the luts or something like that that gives me greater latitude (sort of like the filmic addon that's now part of Blender.)

Even when rendered to and saved as 32 bits, the image can still only be displayed at a much lower bit depth, where you get those clipping problems. That's what I meant by manually tweaking your curves.

Glad that was the culprit!
