Configuration advice, going from 2 GPUS to 4...

Hi Octaners,

I have an Aurora R6 from alienware with 2 gpus :

I recently replaced the two 1080 Gpus (Founder's Edition) with two 2080ti (blower style).

Although it works great and delivers, the cards go up to 86°C on average and I still have two 1080 that sit on my desk doing nothing but collecting dust.

I recently thought about getting a case and a motherboard able to handle all of them (blower style) so I could benefit from the extra power of the missing 1080s... I know that I will have to sacrifice NVlink and Vram in the process, but I still think it is a good idea as I have never ever touched the vram limit of one 1080.

What do you guys think ? Any hardware advice (motherboard + case) for 4 GPUS ?

Thanks !

as for temps, Martange try to adjust fan curves. with a bit more airflow and noise as side effect You should be able to get temps down.

as for mobo and CPU. Well that depends on what else are You looking to do with Your machine. A lot will point You to Threadrippers or new AMDs. Last are not ground tested and it's not too wise to adopt bleeding edge platform while threadrippers will have their strengths and weaknesses.

Personal I would go for for intel (anything from 6c/6t to 8c/16t) depending how much CPU power You would have a need for and something like WS Z390 Pro from ASUS. This combo will allow You to place up to four GPUs and will work great. Got one for myself, did several builds in the past.

Sinc.

Thanks Tom !

I would like to keep my trustworthy i7-7700 K and its watercooled system from the alienware... I guess I'll have to go with intel LGA 1151 just like the WS Z390 you mentionned !

Got any hint about the case that would handle all of this ?
What about the PSU for 2x1080 + 2x2080ti ?
