UV Emission Data (X-particles)

I'm trying to drive a material colour based on the particle colour - which is in turn being driven by an animated noise node.
The particles are being coloured (black and white gradient) by an animated noise node on a plane. The plane is populated with particles then i'm advecting them. I want to drive a material (a colour gradient) based on the animated noise.
I'm basically doing this tut from Insydium but they insist on using Cycles 4D.

I feel it should be easy!? I've created an diffuse tex that has a standard animated noise on it (keyframed one value to get it to show in the Live Viewer - what a pain) but the particles won't inherit the UV Emission data from the material.
Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?
