Can't authenticate the octane license: activation cancelled

I'm running Houdini FX 17.5.229 with the Octane 4.04.0.1 plugin on Windows. Things have been working fine for a weeks. This morning my system said Windows needed to install some updates and reboot. Now I get this when I try to IPR:
Can't authenticate the Octane license: activation cancelled. Could not activate.
I'm pretty sure this is neither a houdini nor octane issue. Other than turning off automatic updates, does anyone have any suggestions of what I might be able to do to start working again? Anyone else seen this? I'm not sure what to do.
