Octane API can't be started (DEMO)

I've just installed the Octane plugin for Houdini Indie 17.5.258 and upon launch I'm greeted with an error stating: "The Octane API can't be starterd*: Tried to start DLL more than once." (*that's the real spelling)
I can launch the Octane IPR, but any attempt to add a material to it, or seeming attempting anything really, results in a Segmentation Fault and subsequent Houdini crash.
Any thoughts as to what would cause this?
I'm running Houdini 17.5.258 and Octane_2018.1.3.0_Houdini_17.5.258_demo_Win64
