Quick question on EXRs

I'm using an Octane EXR to render out an image and a layer mask (using 16-bit, rle compression.) The file size is about 22mb. But if I render the same scene as a 16-bit png and the mask separately, the total is only about 12mb. I've tried other exr types and compressions but haven't found one that helps.

So what can I do to make it comparable? Seems the only advantage to the exr is that everything is wrapped up in one file, but at a huge cost of disk space.

Can someone suggest something to try? What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

OKay, so an even more important question. When I select Octane EXR, the option to choose layer masks (several of them) disappears, and I am only able to render the mask if I activate only that layer. (which then I lose parts of my full shot.)

With regular EXR the option reappears.

How do I create masks of several different layers and also keep the full beauty shot in an exr?

Layer masks will disappear in case because when we use Octane's saving functionality, we cannot save C4D's bitmaps. We can just directly save what Octane have in render passes. With C4D's EXR, we have compression bug.

So I guess you're saying we can only have one layer mask produced at a time using Octane EXR?

I talk about tech of background process. OctaneEXR is for known passes by Octane. Render Masks are custom rendering by plugin. You cannot use it with OctaneEXR, this is the reason why I disable the section.

Okay. It's just frustrating. I want to make a full beauty render and then a couple hold out masks, but it never works the way I want. I'll figure it out.

Thanks, aoktar. You do great work.

Cryptomatte is a better way than masks, you should check it!

Will do. Thank you. (Oh, just realized it's only in 2018. I'll have to wait until my budget comes through to upgrade.)
