Proxies, instancing, translucency...the viability of grass?

Currently in Maya I will create a Vray proxy then instance it thousands of times with whatever tool/script/plugin suits, then apply a Vray2sided material with a translucency map (amongst other things).
Is this workflow possible, or something similar, in Octane?
