emission in mix material no longer working

Opened a project built in 3.0x which used a emission material in a mixed materia lwith a mask defining where the emission and non-emission areas are. This worked previously. now the emission material works when applied directly but not in the mixed material.
The 2 screen grabs show an isolated object with the emission material applied directly (and glowing) and the mixed material where it is hardly showing. the final shot shows output from the original file where the mixed material used to work fine?
Weird. what has changed and how do I fix?
