multiplying a texture over a metal base

I am rendering a body cream tube, it has a matte metal finish as a base, and then has some graphics printed straight onto the metal, and then in a specific area some more graphics printed onto a white base.

Im using a blend material which has a matte metal material on the base, then another material above that with the graphics that are printed straight onto the metal, and then another material above that with the printed white & graphics areas.

The areas on the printed white look fine, but the areas with the graphics printed straight onto the metal look washed out - I need them to multiply with the metal base material.

I've plugged a float texture into the amount slot between the metal base and the graphics, but it just fades the graphics in and out.

How do I achieve the right look?

So, what I would do is -

1) build your metal material
2) build your decal/image/texture material and make sure you have an inverted copy of your texture/decal whatever connected to the opacity node
3) put both materials in a mix material and plug the inverted copy into the amount node.
4) as a base material on your object, use your metal material
5) on top of the base material use the mix material (with a polygon selection tag applied) for the right area on your object

hope that helps in any way :)
