Noise with Area lights

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to deal with the noise i'm getting when i turn on some area lights as pictured in the right side image. Getting the same results using both Pathtracing and Directlighting. These were rendered with Directlighting 1600 max samples and GI ambient occlusion

I'm assuming i'm not seeing the denoiser because i'm running an older version? I'm on 3.08
