Rendering With Multipass

I've been experimenting with multipass rendering (in Cinema 4D) and heard that it might be a way of speeding up renders because you render out seperate layers and not a final flattened image. Is this true? Currently, I can only get it to render out a flattened final image in addition to the individual passes. While this is great, it doesn't speed up my render at all since I'm also rendering that final flattened image in addition. Anyway to disable that?
