Specular on a cylender shape - strange "ghosting"

Hey guys,

I get this strange ghosting whenever I add a specular material on a cylender object in Cinema 4D, and want to fill it with balls.... Nevermind the horrible lighting and setup and only look at the strange "ghost" next to the purple ball to the left. What is it im not tweaking that can make it go away? The only solution I have found is to turn my index waaaaay down but that destroys the look im going for. Ultimately, I just want the surface to look like hard plastic or something with NO bending of the shapes inside. Its funny, because if I add the balls to a box with the same specular material, there is no problem.

Any help would be super cool, I have been looking everywhere, and tweaking all the buttons I can find in Octane :D

All the best,

You'll probably get a better response if you can post a simple example scene, and not just a render, plus version of the software, etc. There are so many variable, like render kernel, ray depth, etc. It's hard to tell from that one image, but it looks like there are more problems with your setup than just the ghosting.

Haha hey frankmci,

I know, the setup is horrible - this is just a test setup, because I have tried so many times, with all sorts of setups, and its the same issue everytime - no matter if its on Pathtracing or Direct lighting ... but sure, I will try to post a cinema file of this setup when I get the chance :) Thank you for you reply!

All the best

Hi,
please check the normal direction of your polygons, it is very important with Specular material.
You can use the InfoChannel Kernel in Wireframe mode, mwith the Wireframe backface highlight option active for this.
You also need thickness, or it will react like a solid glass magnifying lens full of balls.

Oh, yeah, as Beppe said, C4D can produce some really messed up normals. Sometimes simply exporting the geometry as an OBJ and reimporting is a quick and easy fix.

Thanks a lot for all this info guys! I will try to work with it tonight and see if I can get a better result. I have also tried to reverse the normals in the process, but with no result - I was hoping that would fix it. I also tried with 3 different cylenders - one with no top, one with extruded walls and one totally basic one - because I heard about the solid glass part :) All three turned out with horrible ghosting! Its driving me insane because I know its just a matter of pushing the right button :D You know how it is :)

Ill be back with results!

Thanks!

Haha okok, nothing I have done works - I still get this ghosting :D This is so strange. Im gonna leave a screenshot and a cinema file and if anyone feel like checking it out, please let me know what Im missing - and I will be able so sleep at night again :D Again, all I want, is round objects, in a cylender, with specular material on the cylender and NO ghosting on the balls :D Maybe its not possible...

All the best,

Hi,
unfortunately, the c4doctane scene has not been attached.
Alternatively, you can share a link to dropbox, or google drive.
