optimizing tips

hi all,

i hope someone can help me with some general questions. i have gotten alot of help from support with screencaps of settings and projects for testing however i still dont understand quite how to best optimize settings myself when in trouble.

what happens often with octane is that i will be assembling a scene with a decently low rendertime on 2 titans x, but then add a couple of lights and my rendertime multiplies by 5 with no extra geometry, only lights.
i use alot sky volumetrics often so i wonder if its the light propagating through volume that takes up sampling time. i lowered the samples to 10 on irrelevant lights and 200 to main lights.

as a result as soon es it really gets interesting, my renderingh time starts getting slower and slower.
is it possible its due to gpu temperature? should i take breaks and turn off the pc sometimes?

sometimes also i especially in the fog background, i need to increase the intensity to 100-160. is that too extreme?

also the live viewer seems to be quite a bit faster than the renderer itself.

all in all the question is, how to avoid having these bottlenecks and pitfalls. how to ensure that the rendering time stays lower, where can i cut corners, what are the biggest resource/time eaters?

hope someone can give me a few tips. i´ve looked around the net for a while now.
