Noise in Volumetrics

I've watched David Ariew's volumetric tutorial and have set up a little scene with a camera inside a box with a window, an area light outside for light coming through the window, another area light for a bit of fill inside the room, and an Octane daylight object to provide the scattering medium.

It works, but there is so much noise, this render is 5000 samples with Direct Lighting.

Is there a trick to clean this up or do I just have to have a ridiculous amount of samples?

Hi,
try to set the GI Clamp <= 10, 16000 sampling and Adaptive Sampling active at 0.05, or have a look at this other similar discussion:

There is no GI clamp setting using Direct Lighting, I have to use Path Tracing and that's even noisier. Is the noise because the scene is contained in a box and the light is coming through a window? I've heard Octane struggles with interiors.

Hi,
DL is simply not good with fog, please, switch to Path Tracing.
If you are in a closed space, use the cube v2 technique, instead of the environment medium to gain more speed, just avoid to place the camera inside the fog cube.
