Random colours change

Hiya

Is there a way to stop the random colour texture from generating new colours?
I have instanced cars in a car park but as I hide/unhide the cars for animating I discover they've changed colour when I unhide them. They aren't animated, it's just the camera moving through the scene.

The material is a random colour texture put into input on a gradient texture put into the diffuse slot of the material.

Surely the only reason they should change is if I change the random seed value?
This pretty much makes random colour texture un-usable :o

Well I don't actually know what causes the colours to change.
Saved and closed my max file in case I needed to do more frames Just opened it again (so made no changes to anything) and can you spot the difference in these 2? Might get away with it if my client is colourblind...

Hi Rik,
does seem to work like that?

Thank Paride.
Is there a vid explaining the process for max like the one you've done for Rhino?

Though wouldn't this also make the colours change randomly.

Are you saying that to stop colours changing randomly we have to use the id settings in the objects octane properties?
Never really got to grips with the process for doing it this way. Could not work out how many different ids were needed and what they were referring to - number of objects/position in % along the gradient bar/material id number for different objects...
Do you then have to change settings if you were to copy the geometry,

Hi Rik,
ID number means step number colors or textures chosen that you will use.. ID0-ID1-ID2 etc, not the maximum number of objects in the scene.

Thanks Paride
Sorry about this, got a few more questions...

Is id number the same thing as material id?

On the gradient ramp I see only 3 colours but the count under the bar says 4.
Is this because the last half triangle on the right which is green and in the green section is actually representing a 4th colour which is not visible?
Presumably the cyan colour in the block below is the 4th colour and whatever colour is at position 1 will never be visible/shown if the interp type is set to constant.

Could you make it so that the last 'half' triangle is the same colour as whatever is at position 1, so in your example it should be cyan rather than green as this is confusing.

In the octane object properties dialogue box, can you explain what the user instance id and start and actually refer to?

Does any of it refer to a position along the gradient bar of the gradient texture?

Are any of them linked to the 'count' value of different colours used it the gradient bar of the gradient texture?

What should all the values be if for example you has 300 instances which you needed to have 4 different colours applied randomly to?

Hi Rik,
I think you're definitely right, something in Random color node does not work as it should with hidden objects.
I'll ask to developers and I'll let you know as soon as possible.
