"Unavailable" VRAM - Where has it gone?

I'm rendering a fairly simple scene on a 1080 ti (11Gb VRAM), but I'm getting constant render failures.

The log says that over 10gb of the VRAM on the GPU is unavailable. What does this mean? It is being used by another app? I only have C4D open.

Can anyone decipher the render log to tell me what is wrong?

Cheers,

Rory.

OK so I've just opened GPU-Z and checked the stats...

C4D with a blank scene is taking up over 8GB of memory on the GPU. This can't be right can it?

Looks like it was Redshift. By default I load a redshift material at startup, and somehow, that was taking up 8GB of video memory.

I turned off all Redshift stuff and the VRAM usage is back to normal.

So yeah, Redshift by default reserves 90% of your VRAM, even if you're not using it. If you have it open anywhere it'll eat that up.

This is probably old information for you guys, but good to know.

You should ask to RS people why this happens and wish a fix.

Yeah RS hugs all the VRAM it even creates problems with TFD and simulating with GPU
