Like many here I have been having watchdog violation errors over the last few months with the most recent Nvidia drivers (prior to then rock solid machine). My machine is basically unusable with any Nvidia driver other than 382 or prior. However, with the massive improvements of Octane 4 I can't just sit on driver 382 as it requires Cuda 9. I think I may have read just about every forum on the internet regarding this issue trying to find some fix. I have read the Octane Render public group threads on this, the Octane reddit forums, the Redshift forums (yes they are having this problem as well), the Microsoft complaint forums, and some fairly obscure hacker forums.

What appears to be common to everyone having the problems is an Asus WS X99 board of some flavor, in combination with 4 cards with some Nvidia driver after 382. My build is below. I have updated bios, Windows, Nvidia drivers, tried different CRD versions, Windows fresh installs, played with bios setting, changed the Nvidia power consumption defaults, changed Octane versions, updated random drivers of every program on my machine and a other things as well. Nothing will give me a stable build, except Nvidia driver 382. I would greatly prefer not to go to Windows 7, as I have other things that need Windows 10.

So what can I do? I can wait and hope that Nvidia cares enough about our little niche world to spend the time to address this. I can hope that nonexistent support at Asus would take the time to address this. The only thing that seems to be a real fix is getting a different motherboard and just embracing all the plug in reinstallation's issues.

For people with 4 1080tis running well on their machines with the latest drivers, what is your mobo (especially x99 mobos)? I know this is the expensive solution, but I just am tired of this issue and want something that works. Any other ideas? Thanks.

My best choice would be to go back to windows 7 but..
some users find issues with last Nvidia drivers and Windows 10 (with fall creators update too) does not seem to be friendly with multiGPUs.
Said that, you would try using Nvidia 388.13

Thanks for your suggestion of 388.13, however it doesn't work. Still the same watchdog crashes. The only working driver is 382.

For people with stable x99 computers with 4 gpus running (and recent Nvidia drivers) what motherboards are you using?

did you find a solution other than the 382 driver? (382.33)
I also have an X-99 and I will test the 3.08 with the drivers 388.13 and 388.71. I'll keep you informed because I myself had a lot of trouble finding a driver that works.

I'm stuck in the same boat, though i keep getting error 43 on my video cards, device will not start. I assumed it's because i'm mixing multiple generations of cards 980ti and the older Titan Z. So this is also with all cards of the same generation? Please confirm this as i was about to sell all my video cards and purchase 3 1080ti, hoping to fix the error 43.

The common thread here is that the only driver that works for me with no errors is 382.33
I'd like to update cuda. I read the you can download the cuda toolkit and choose not update nvidia drivers and just update cuda.

If i have time i will try this today.

While I am not an expert, I have read everything online I can find about this issue. This is not about card generation (all mine are 1080tis). This is a problem with the specific combo of an Asus X99 WS board (the 10g or the 3.1 versions), with Nvidia drivers after 382 (although I did see some Asrock WS people with the same problem). It is also not about Windows reinstallations, or Dropbox or anything like that---tried it all, still crashed on clean installs. It is an not an Octane problem because Redshift Asus X99 WS boards report the same problem. It is also not an issue with all Asus boards, just the WS boards. I ended up switching my motherboard and processor, went with the Asus Rampage VI on the x299 chipset and have had no stability issues. There is something about memory management or some protocol on the Asus WS board bios that is not playing well with Nvidia post 382. Maybe its the PLX chip? I kept my X99 WS in a different machine and plan to use the computer as a slave render node once V4 comes out (to the extent I keep it stable with this problem). I still hope someone finds a solution to this, but I am not hopeful, as honestly we are small niche group and unless someone with pull at Otoy makes it an issue with their friends at Nvidia I am not sure we will get a fix. I spent an extra couple grand to make the switch, but I don't dread turning on my machine now after months of frustration, and I can keep my software up to date. I decided to stay sane.

I have also an X99-E WS/USB3.1 with 7GPUs and works well now with 387.92 drivers and octane 3.08 or 4 XB1.
Have only problem when I've played with vbios. Now revert back to original vbios to pass the cuda 9.10 drivers (from 387.92).

itou31, may I ask precisely what motherboard bios version you are using? Were there any special modifications you made to get the 7 cards working? Thanks.

That system you report as stable, what windows version is that?

I have an Asrock X99 WS-E/10G with 4x980ti's. Running Windows 10. And my system is only stable on the 378 driver.
Everything above that is crashing and BSOD'ing.

I think the culprit to this whole issue is the Windows 10 on an X99 motherboard that has an PLX Pex8747 chip.
Every Nvidia driver above that is faulty.

@nautical007 : I have the 3502 bios, and nothing special in the bios to support 7 GPUs.

@CPH_Pixels : I'm on windows 8.1 x64 to able to use all VRAM of GPU. On windows 10, I lost some VRAM, but the 7GPU work well also with 387.92 drivers.
I have and issue with my other 4GPUs rig (P9x79) with BSOD when I upgraded from 382.xx to 387.92, it's is due to not a clean install and also some of my GPU have not an original vbios (it's about power modification the the Vbios that cannot handle by new drivers).
