Octane Node Graph Editor for 3DS Max

Is there more information about this? The information in the manual about the node graph editor seems extremely limited. How can one access the node graph editor in 3DS Max without opening the Octane Viewport? On the rare occasion that I can actually get the node graph editor to open without crashing 3DS Max, it is utterly unusable. Despite my PC running just fine, the node graph editor is crawling. I just want to understand better what the point of it is and how to use it properly.
I converted a pretty meager scene I had previously assembled with VRay, using the octane conversion tool. Everything was fine up until for no apparent reasons whatsoever, the scene started crashing the Octane viewport. Even after deleting all materials, trying to start from scratch with Octane materials, it seems there is some history left over in the Octane Node Editor or elsewhere, that is causing problems for the rendering.
