So X-particles 4 is out. any plan of supporting rendering of its volume simulations?

Thx,
Guy

Well, I just received the free upgrade yesterday and there is a way, if you can get it to make the vdb files.

xpCache now exports open vdb files. There is a pulldown menu to change the file export to open vdb under the EFX format menu (it's not shown in the video, but you can see the menu around :28 seconds in the video.) This is supposed to cache your simulations as sequential .vdb files. However, every time I try it all I get are .xpc files, even though I have changed the EFX format to openvdb.

I was going to register at their forums but it is an unsecured site and it wants your serial number. I wish web admins would notice this stuff.

Yup thx, I know about this option but I'm hoping for a native support that doesn't entail exporting to a file each time u make a change. something like the TFD workflow where u render out straight from the container would be much better

Thx,
Guy

Yeah, I agree. You can put some XP generators in TFD containers and that works, but I haven't worked with it enough to say something works for certain.

Maybe when they prepared new API for 3rd parties.

The cache issue with XP4 is a bug,

Delete your cache, add a new one, select save as VDB and then run the cache process.

If you re cache, it won't save vdb files, you have to delete and re-add to get it to work. Theyre aware of the issue.

on the Octane side, use the new particle nodes to get information about particles and display colour, speed age radius etc. Not as deep as XP's settings, but still good.

Thanks, orb101. I finally got it all working. It seems to only makes vdbs with Explosiafx, not other volumes/emitters. But I'm still investigating that.

The only odd issue is that the Octane vdb volume renders and shows up fine in the LiveViewer, but not in the C4D viewport where it only shows up as bounding boxes.
