Lightwave plug-in opacity map question

Hi,
I'm checking out the demo and was wondering, is it normal that a simple black and white opacity map with a leaf shape connected to a diffuse shader used for tree leaves basically triples rendering times? Not even refraction and reflections make such an impact. Maybe I'm overlooking something?
