Very new to Octane and need help

Hello everyone,

Just a warning, I am very new to Octane and may ask some stupid questions. I do try to look through the forum or web for answers before I come here.

I am trying out black body lighting and have set a basic scene (see attached). Am I correct in saying you need a diffuse material to add black body lighting?

What I cant understand and is my first question is how to use a different material for each part in the scene, at the moment the diffuse material only slots into the end port and puts that material over all parts, what am I doing wrong.

Hope I make sense.

Thanks,

Kurt

Hi kellio,
welcome to the community :)
What is your modelling app?
Now your mesh has only one material assigned, and four Object layer nodes for each part.
Since OctaneRender is a render engine, it is better to organize your geometry with different materials, basically different naming and colors, before exporting.
If the name and number of materials stays, then you can update the mesh node with a new corrected one, without losing any material connection.
In short, you need to have more material pins after importing your mesh, then you can create all the different materials that are needed.
Another way to add an emissive node, is to import a different object to group with your mesh, or use this Lua script to generate an emissive plane to group with your scene and move it independently:

Hi bepeg4d,

Firstly thanks for helping me out.

Im using Maya, assigned materials with different names and colours but nothing changing in octane. Maya screen shot attached

To import a scene (mesh/obj) i do it through "right click, geometry, mesh" ?

Thanks,

Kurt

Hi kellio,
from Maya, export in .obj format selecting all the options:

Then in Standalone, after importing the mesh node, you should see all the yellowish pins of all the different materials:

Clicking on the tool icon, you can specify the cortrect scale and other interesting settings, like hiding or not the Object layer, subdivision, and so on.
Happy rendering,
ciao beppe
