To install the plugin by hand on windows :

- Open the installer as an archive with 7zip for example
- open the 35bin folder
- copy Octane.dll and Octane.dat to ../Maya201x/bin/
- copy plug-ins folder content in ../Maya201x/bin/plug-ins/
- copy rendererDesc folder content in ../Maya201x/bin/rendererDesc/

If you are installing for Maya 2015 it's done.

For other version, get the right plugin:

- 36bin folder contain 2016 plugin
- 37bin folder contain 2016.5 plugin
- 38bin folder contain 2017 plugin

and copy it in ../Maya201x/bin/plug-ins/

That's it.
