How to customize dof /bokeh shapes ? I saw this image is done in c4d octane, is it possible to recreate the bokeh effect in 3dsmax octane ?

If you need it now in Max, here is how to do it, (c4d tutorial but it's the same process in Max) :

But Custom Bokeh is a builtin feature in Octane 3.06,
so you could just wait for a plugin version using the 3.06 Octane core version.
Or you can test it in Standalone here :

To allow different bokeh shapes than just circles, we added these new options to the depth of field settings of the thin lens camera node:
  • Bokeh side count: Defines the number of sides of the bokeh shape, which is usually the number of blades of the diaphragm in a camera.
  • Bokeh rotation: Defines the orientation of the bokeh shape.
  • Bokeh roundedness: Defines how round the bokeh shape sides should be rendered.

While the sides will help, this is not "custom" bokeh, it is just polygonal. True custom bokeh will be image files. Also, the effect jim99 is after is more of an edge effect than a shape. While this is currently possible with "Aperture Edge" in the camera settings, its effect is fairly limited (which I hope is changed soon as well). You can try setting it to 3 for maximum effect. It will do an okay job but your example shows a very heavy (and thick) version above what octane can currently produce.

Oh right, didn't look well at the picture, still a round shape
Well, not completely out of subject, as I guess new Octane core options are a first step toward fully customizable bokeh.
